1. The Big Roundtable seeks to publish true stories. They want long-form narrative non-fiction. They believe storytelling is central to what it means to be human. According to their website, their core values include “voice, inclusion, surprise, and journalism.” Most importantly, they want stories that are 100% true. They pay a minimum of $100. 2. Chicken Soup for the Soul actively seeks submissions of inspirational stories about real life events. They pay $200 per essay, and are currently seeking submissions for 11 books. The next deadline is June 30th, 2016. To learn more, read this article.
3. Ploughshares, the renowned literary journal, is currently seeking queries for “Look2”, their series on essays about underappreciated/overlooked writers. They pay up to $250 per essay. They accept queries only. The submission process is rather confusing. You will need to create an account before accessing the submission page. 4. Slice is currently seeking submissions for their Spring 2017 issue, with the theme “Corporeal.” They pay $250 for stories and essays, and $75 for poems. Essays should be no more than 5,000 words. The deadline is August 1, 2016. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
5. Bitch Magazine is a non-profit, feminist magazine dedicated to a thoughtful feminist response to mainstream media and popular culture. They pay $200 for features, $100 for Dispatches, which are columns on film, television, language, activism, advertising, publishing, and more, with pieces taking the form of reviews, critical essays, Q&As, and activist profiles.
