Tor.com is currently accepting fiction submissions. They’re a prominent publisher of speculative fiction. They pay generously, up to $2,000 for the first 10k words of a story.
They define “speculative fiction” broadly. Fantasy, horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and alternative histories fit in their guidelines. They are known as one of the very best publishers in their category. It is highly competitive to be published by them, but acceptance offers good pay, and prestige that will help advance any writers career.
According to their website they “pay 25 cents a word for the first 5,000 words, 15 cents a word for the next 5,000, and 10 cents a word after that.” That works out to $2,000 for the first 10k words. Not bad.
They accept online submissions through their submissions manager. They usually respond within three months.
The word limit is 17,500 words. Most stories they publish are shorter than 12,000 words.
They are also currently accepting submissions of non-fiction articles. They are “interested in pitches for essays, think pieces, list posts, reaction pieces, and reviews in the 1000-2000 word range”
