Cricket Magazine, often referred to as the New Yorker for children, is a nationally distributed literary journal for kids. They publish short stories, non-fiction articles, poetry, and puzzles/crafts/activities for children.

They pay up to 25 cents per word for nonfiction articles, and $3 per line for poetry. They pay 10 cents per word for short stories.
They are a very widely read magazine, with intense competition for publication. Before submitting, it is wise to read one of their issues, which is likely to be available in your local library or bookstore.
Most short stories they publish are 1200 to 1800 words in length. They also look for shorter pieces of 600 to 900 words.
