19 Fiction Markets that Pay $100+ for Short Stories

These are calls for fiction submissions that pay $100; some pay up to $100 and others pay considerably more. There are markets for dark, speculative fiction, literary fiction, fiction by marginalised communities, pulp, thriller, romance, mystery and special submission calls for anthologies. Many of these markets also pay for other genres.

Heroic Fantasy Quarterly

They publish sword and sorcery, both in poetry and prose. They have a detailed list of tropes/topics that work for them, and what doesn’t. They read fiction in March, June, September and December.
Deadline: 30 June 2017 for fiction, rolling for poetry
Word count: Fiction of up to 10,000 words, can serialise up to 50,000 words; up to 3 poems, maximum of 30 pages
Pay: $100 for fiction, $25 for poetry; Tolkinesque (really long) poetry will be paid like fiction, and fiction of less than 1,000 words will fetch $25

Diabolical Plots

They publish science fiction, fantasy and horror – feel free to mix in other genres with these. All stories must have a speculative element. They list the tropes/elements they particularly like, and hard sells. They became a SWFA qualifying market last year. Deadline: Opens for reading in July.
Word count: Up to 3,500; can send two stories in a reading period

Broken Pencil

This is a Canadian magazine of zine culture and independent art. They publish various columns and features on alternative culture, including profiles, events and trends. They want fiction that confirms to no guidelines, principles or preconceptions.
Deadline: 15 July 2017 for the Canzine issue, for articles; 15 September 2017 for fiction
Word count: Up to 3,000 for fiction; 400 words for Pencil Sharpener column, 2 pages for Folio, 1,000-3,000 words for features

Helios Quarterly Magazine: First Contact & Conversations

They publish science fiction, fantasy and horror. For their theme issue, they want fiction that questions how we construct the “other” – and stories, poems and non-fiction within the cyberpunk, solarpunk, dieselpunk or other realms. They also publish Eos Quarterly, the submission calls of which are concurrent for the Helios Quarterly, for which they accept pieces by marginalised groups – which are not limited to race, religion, ability status or sex.  They are specially interested in stories that push the boundaries of genre.

Word count: Poetry up to 100 lines; 100-10,000 for various fiction categories

Third Flatiron: Strange Beasties

This is a slipstream anthology featuring odd literary devices or creatures. They need not be monsters, but they should be strange.

Aliterate

They publish literary genre fiction, including SF, fantasy, western, horror, pulps, thriller and romance. They have a science fiction/fantasy lean. Most of their submissions are bleak; happy pieces are more apt to stand out. The call is for all writers, except those from Crimea, Cuba, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, and Syria as the publishers cannot pay them.

New Myths

They publish speculative fiction of every kind, except graphic horror. They also publish at least one one non-fiction essay, poems and reviews in each issue.

Exile Publishing: The Food Of My People

This is a speculative writing anthology – food and nourishment must be an integral part of the story and the outcome. Submissions must be by Canadian residents and they welcome diverse voices. There is a 10% window for content by non-Canadian residents.

Dragon’s Roost Press: Hidden Animals – A Collection of Cryptids

They want dark speculative fiction that features one or more of the lesser-known, but established cryptids (an animal or creature whose existence or survival is disputed or unsubstantiated, like Bigfoot, or Nessie). They will accept only one story per cryptid. Authors must put their own spin on the creature, to make them terrifying, sympathetic or humorous, but shouldn’t create a new creature. This is a charity anthology to raise money for the canine rescue organization, Last Day Dog Rescue.

Westerly Magazine

This is an Australia-based magazine with a strong international reputation. It covers literature and culture – fiction, poetry, memoir, creative non-fiction, essays and literary criticism. This special print issue will feature writing that focuses on the connections between Australia and the Asia and Indian Ocean region.

Word count: Up to 3,500 for fiction and creative non-fiction; 5,000 for essays; 500-700 for reviews; up to 5 poems of 50 lines each
