These are grants and fellowships for writers, poets, and playwrights, ranging from $500 to $166,000. They are for writers in all stages of their careers. The grants are for many purposes, from buying writers time to focus on writing, to finding funding for research and travel, to emergency funds for writers. The residencies are set in beautiful and/or culturally and intellectually vibrant settings. Getting some of these grants/residencies can give a real boost to a writer’s career, and open doors. Prague – City of Literature
This is a residency in Prague for writers all over the world, and translators. Writers should have cultural interest for the location, basic knowledge of English, at least one published literary work (not a private edition) or two broadcast or published radio dramas or one carried out or published theatre play or at least one translated work of a Czech author, willingness to participate on the local literary life (author readings, meeting students, talks, activities arranged by the receiving institution or connected to the cultural events of the city), and work on writing during their stay.

ABR Behrouz Boochani Fellowship
This fellowship by Australian Book Review (ABR) is for writers and journalists all over the world. It honours the artistry, courage and moral leadership of Behrouz Boochani, an Iranian-Kurdish poet, journalist, memoirist, film producer and human rights activist. The chosen Fellow will make a broad contribution to ABR over the course of twelve months, with a series of three substantial articles on any aspect of refugees, statelessness or human rights. They welcome proposals from English-speaking journalists, commentators, scholars, activists, and creative writers around the world. The Fellow’s articles will appear in the print magazine and online. The Fellow will work closely with the Editor of ABR throughout the year. The outcome is expected to be a suite of brilliant journalism/commentary from a highly engaged and professional writer. The Fellow will produce three substantial articles for publication in the magazine. These can be review essays, commentaries, or interviews – or a combination of all three genres. All proposals must have Australian resonances and must speak to ABR’s readership.

The Authors’ Foundation Grants
These are by The Society of Authors for writers whose works of fiction, non-fiction or poetry have been commissioned by a British publisher, or those who have had at least one book published by a British publisher and there is a strong likelihood that the next work will be published in Britain. They are for works in progress. All applicants will also be considered automatically for specific grants offering funding for writing in the fields of biography about women, the environment and natural history, travel writing, philanthropy, poetry, racial understanding, Japan, science fiction, fantasy and magical realism (open to adult and children’s writers), spy thrillers and crime (see guidelines).

Bludell Trust Award

These are grants by the Society of Authors for British writers under the age of 40 whose work aims to increase social awareness. The project can be fiction or non-fiction and the grant can be used for research, travel, or other expenditure.

Harvard University: Radcliffe Institute Fellowships
These are for various disciplines, including creative writing – poetry, fiction, non-fiction, as well as journalism, playwriting and screenwriting. Their guidelines also say, “Applicants may apply as individuals or in a group of two to three people working on the same project. We seek diversity along many dimensions, including discipline, career stage, race and ethnicity, country of origin, gender and sexual orientation, and ideological perspective. Although our fellows come from many different backgrounds, they are united by their demonstrated excellence, collegiality, and creativity.”
Value: $77,500, additional $5,000 for project expenses, office at Harvard University, additional funds for moving expenses, childcare and housing, etc.

National Playwright Residency Program
The program is by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, together with HowlRound Theatre Commons at Emerson College. It provides three years of salary, benefits, and a flexible research and development fund for a diverse group of American playwrights at selected theaters around the US. Theaters and playwrights must apply jointly by submitting statements of intent from the playwright and artistic director; a scope of work; and other specified materials to demonstrate eligibility, potential to achieve the goals of the program, and desire to participate in a growing network to advance artist-centered practices in the theater field. Playwright compensation and benefits will be covered by grant funds based on the salary structure of the host institution, up to a maximum salary and benefits of $130,000 in the first year of the grant. Resident playwrights will also receive access to discretionary development funds and opportunities for developmental workshops hosted by HowlRound at Emerson College. Artists must reside close to the theater and stay there for the full three years of the residency. And  at least three of their plays must be previously given professional productions—with one at the co-applicant theater.

Fondation Jan Michalski Residencies for Writers
These are residencies at the foot of the Jura mountains in Montricher, Switzerland. It is open to all types of writers engaged in literary creation. While they give priority to writers and translators, they are also open to any other discipline as long as writing is at the heart of the project. There are no age or nationality restrictions. Writers working on a project with a collaborator can apply in pairs.

These are for various disciplines, including art and literature, and they award about 10 scholarships in literature each year. There are no age-limit restrictions for applying.

Guggenheim Fellowships
These are for people in various disciplines, including literature, who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts. Princeton Arts Fellowship
This is for artists in many disciplines, including literary, whose achievements have been recognized as demonstrating extraordinary promise in any area of artistic practice and teaching. This is a two-year program and there is a teaching duty attached. Writers do not have to be US citizens to apply. You can apply for this fellowship twice in a lifetime.

Hodder Fellowships
Potential Hodder Fellows are composers, choreographers, performance artists, visual artists, writers or other kinds of artists or humanists who have “much more than ordinary intellectual and literary gifts”; they are selected more “for promise than for performance.”  Most writers have had their first book published. The Hodder is designed to provide Fellows with the “studious leisure” to undertake significant new work. One does not have to be a US citizen to apply for this ten-month fellowship.

American Academy in Berlin Fellowship
This is for US-based people who wish to engage in independent study. Writers must have published at least one book (poets are by invitation only). Past recipients have included anthropologists, art historians, literary scholars, philosophers, historians, musicologists, journalists, writers, filmmakers, sociologists, legal scholars, economists, and public policy experts, among others. For 2020/21, the Academy will also award three specially designated fellowships: two Andrew W. Mellon Fellowships in the Humanities, for work that demonstrates an interest in the topics of migration and social integration, race in comparative perspective, or exile and return. In addition, in memory of its founder, the Academy will name a Richard C. Holbrooke Fellow for a project that looks at diplomatic approaches to resolving major global issues, from armed conflicts to environmental challenges to the impact of new technologies. They also offer accommodation for families with children.

New York Public Library’s Cullman Center Fellowship
The Cullman Center’s Selection Committee awards fifteen Fellowships a year to outstanding scholars and writers—academics, independent scholars, journalists, creative writers (novelists, playwrights, poets), translators, and visual artists. Foreign nationals conversant in English are welcome to apply. Candidates for the Fellowship will need to work primarily at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building rather than at other divisions of the Library. People seeking funding for research leading directly to a degree are not eligible.

Miles Morland Foundation Writing Scholarship
This is for fiction writers who were born in Africa or both of whose parents were born in Africa. Writers of non-fiction can also apply, and receive additional funds at the discretion of the foundation panel. Writers are asked to donate a percentage of earnings from sales of what they have written in the scholarship period to the Miles Morland Foundation – a moral obligation, though not a legally binding one. The money is paid monthly over a course of a year. For non-fiction writers, additional funds can be made available, and given over a period of 18 months.

Getty Scholar Grants
These are for researchers of all nationalities who are working in the arts, humanities, or social sciences, for established scholars and writers who have achieved distinction in their fields. Recipients can pursue their own projects free from academic obligations and make use of Getty collections. There are three-, six-, and nine-month residencies.

The Camargo Core Program
This residency at Cassis, France is for artists (including writers and playwrights) and scholars/thinkers, to think, create and connect. Applicants should have a publication and/or grant track record. They welcome spouses/partners and dependent minor children. Fellowships span 6 to 11 weeks.

Canada Council for the Arts’ Explore and Create Grants
These are for Canadian artists, curators and writers (including poets and graphic novelists). The grants are for creative research, creation, and project development, including residencies. Grants provide support for creative research, creation and project development. Individuals who are Deaf or who have disabilities, including those living with mental illness, and require accommodation at any stage of the application process may be eligible for additional assistance.

Fellowships for Creative and Performing Artists and Writers
These are fellowships for historical research by the American Antiquarian Society by those who wish to produce “imaginative, non-formulaic works dealing with pre-twentieth-century American history.” Room fee will be charged if staying in the Society’s scholars’ housing. Fellowship projects may include (but are not limited to) historical novels, documentary films, TV programs, radio broadcasts, plays, screenplays, illustration and other graphic arts, magazine or newspaper articles, and non-fiction works of history for a general audience, either for adults or for children.

SmokeLong Quarterly Flash Fellowship for Emerging Writers
This is for new and emerging writers. Applicants need to send four samples of flash fiction under 1,000 words. The writer will be a virtual writer-in-residence for four quarterly issues in 2020 – March, June, September and December. Fellows will also participate in online writing workshops, workshopping three flash stories each quarter, with the goal of creating a robust flash portfolio by the end of the year. The Fellow will also get an inside look at the editing process, reading and voting on submissions and acting as a guest editor for one week during their residency.

The 2020 Frontier New Voices Fellowship
This fellowship is for giving opportunity and access to poets often excluded into the margins of our community. They are seeking emerging writers traditionally under represented by mainstream magazines and presses. The grant is twice yearly, and is meant to be used toward covering industry submission costs, multiple publications (original poetry and prose) in Frontier, participation in their editorial community, and introductions to agents and presses. They customize their fellowships to meet the needs of their chosen fellow: hours per month, number of publications, and publication involvement will vary based on our fellow’s availability. For this application cycle, they want applications from poets who are undocumented and living in America. The application includes up to five poems (published or unpublished).

The Howard Foundation Fellowships
These are funds for rotating disciplines. For the 2020-21 cycle, the fields are fiction, poetry, and playwriting and theatre studies. These fellowships are to buy writers time for their work, and are often used to supplement a sabbatical leave. They are for early mid-career writers based in the US.

The Haven Foundation Grants
These grants were instituted by Stephen King after he suffered a debilitating accident. They give financial assistance to help freelance artists and writers who have suffered disabilities or a career-threatening illness, accident, natural disaster or personal catastrophe.

The Bellagio Center Arts & Literary Arts Residency
This residency, by the Rockefeller Foundation, is for composers, fiction and non-fiction writers, playwrights, poets, video/filmmakers, dancers, musicians, and visual artists who share in the Foundation’s mission of promoting the well-being of humankind and whose work is inspired by or relates to global or social issues. There is also space for the writers’ spouses/life partners.
