Apparition Lit: Chance
­­­­­This speculative fiction and poetry magazine will open a brief submission period for work on the ‘Chance’ theme. They are looking for all kinds of speculative fiction – fantasy, sci-fi, horror, and literary. Reading period: 15-28 February 2021
Length: 1,000-5,000 words for fiction; up to 5 poems

It Gets Even Better: Stories of Queer Possibility
They want speculative fiction for this anthology, stories about positive queer possibility. Their guidelines say, “Stories may feature near-future social and political change, far-future imaginings of new societies, alternate universes with completely different systems of gender and relationships, alternate histories proposing better outcomes for true events of the past, creative explorations of queer identity—any kind of speculative fiction that posits queer affirmation and joy … please submit to us only if you are comfortable with “queer” being used to describe your story.” All kinds of representations of queer identities are welcome. Writers can submit up to three stories at once (see guidelines). They also accept reprints (audio rights must be available).

Length: Up to 15,000 words (most acceptances likely under 7,000 words)

New Myths
They publish speculative fiction of every kind, except graphic horror. They also accept non-fiction, poems, reviews (query first), and artwork with speculative fiction themes.

Pay: 1.5c/word for prose and poetry; $60+ for art

The Puritan
This Canadian literary magazine publishes fiction, non-fiction – interviews, essays (accepts pitches), and reviews – and poetry from all over the world. They accept a limited number of fee-free submissions every month.
Deadline: 25 March 2021 for Spring issue; reads year-round
Length: Up to 10,000 words for fiction, up to 4 poems; various for non-fiction (see guidelines)
Pay: $200 (Canadian) per essay; $150 for fiction; $100 per interview or review; $25 per poem (or page, capped at $80)

Goodman Publications: Tales From The Magician’s Skull
This is a sword and sorcery magazine and their goal is to publish twice-yearly. From their ‘What we love’ section: “Sword-and-sorcery, heroic fiction, sword-and-soul, swashbucklers, and the like. Tales of adventure shot through with elements of horror and magic. Give us interesting people doing interesting things for interesting reasons in fascinating places.” See guidelines for further details on story preferences and tropes to avid. Stories have to be PG-13. They have limited tolerance for flash fiction.

Epoch Magazine
­­­­­This literary magazine is edited by faculty at Cornell University. They publish fiction, poetry, essays, cartoons, screenplays, graphic art, and graphic fiction. They only accept mailed submissions. The deadline is for unsolicited submissions; they read work submitted by literary agencies year-round.   
Deadline: 15 April 2021
Length: No guidelines for prose; up to 5 poems
Pay: Up to $150 for stories, more for long stories and novellas, and those submitted by literary agencies; $50/poem

The Threepenny Review
This respected quarterly journal is open for submissions. They accept fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and submissions for their ‘Table Talk’ column. They have a shorter reading period this year.
Deadline: 30 April 2021
Length: Up to 4,000 words for stories or memoirs, 1,200-2,500 for critical articles, up to 1,000 words for Table Talk, up to 100 lines for poems
Pay: $400 per story or article, $200 per poem or Table Talk piece

Strange Horizons
This is a magazine of speculative fiction. They specially welcome work from groups that are under-represented or have been marginalized in the genre. They also accept poetry, reviews, essays, columns, interviews, and round-tables. They are open Monday to Tuesday (see guidelines), and have reopened fiction submissions in February after a hiatus.

Infinite Worlds
This magazine publishes science fiction. They publish comic/graphic novel shorts as well, and artwork.

The Arcanist
This magazine publishes speculative flash fiction — science fiction, fantasy, horror and their sub-genres. They love humorous works, horrifying works, and timely works. They do not want excessive gore (also see other hard sells, etc.). Writers can send up to three stories. They have raised their pay rates.
