Dirty Magick Magazine
This is a new fiction magazine, and they’re reading for their fist issue. “Dirty Magick Magazine specializes in fantasy fiction with a hard-boiled edge. We are interested in urban fantasy, sword and sorcery, and gothic/supernatural horror. We also like speculative fiction, especially steampunk and cyberpunk, but they must contain a magical twist. But the true spirit of this magazine lies in the hybrid space, where crime/detective modes can be combined with fantastic premises.” Deadline: 15 August 2024

PseudoPod

This online magazine and podcast, from the Escape Artists suite of magazines, will open for horror fiction submissions for a brief period in August.

Ecotone
This is “the literary magazine dedicated to reimagining place” – they accept fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. They usually charge for online submissions, but will open a brief window for fee-free submissions. During Fall 2024, they will accept fee-free submissions of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry during August 29–31; they especially welcome work from writers historically underrepresented in literary publishing during this submission window. And September 1–5 is their general submission window for poetry, fiction, and nonfiction ($3 fee via Submittable, no fee via post).

Split Lip Magazine
They accept fiction, memoir, poetry, and art. For fiction, “We favor interesting, literary narratives with a modern, pop culture appeal. Voice-driven prose also gets us fired up.” They accept fee-free submissions during certain months (January, March, May, August, September, November), and close submissions when their cap is reached. And, “In an effort to promote Black voices, free submissions will be open for Black writers and artists in all genres all year (except when we are closed to all submissions in July and the second half of December).” They will reopen for submissions mid-August.
Reading period: 15-31 August 2024, or until filled, for fee-free submissions
Length: Up to 3,000 words for fiction, up to 2,000 words for memoir, 1 poem
Pay: $75 for poems, memoirs, flash, fiction, and art, $50 for interviews/reviews, and $25 for mini-reviews for their web issues

The Ampersand Review

This magazine is affiliated with Sheridan College, and they are reading for Issue 7. They accept fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. They recommend a maximum of 3,000 words for fiction, of 4,000 words for nonfiction essays/memoirs (or nonfiction excerpts), and up to 5 poems.

Orion’s Belt
This is a speculative flash fiction and poetry magazine. Their website says, “We specialize in the strange and poignant and awe-inspiring, stories that have a cosmic scale and intimate personal stakes. Currently, we publish fiction and poetry, one story and one poem per month.” They have detailed guidelines, please read them carefully.

Toronto Journal
This journal publishes in print and sound. You can read about them here. They accept short stories from anywhere in the world, and non-fiction pieces about local history (Toronto, the GTA, or surrounding areas – see guidelines).

Consequence Magazine
They publish work “that addresses the human experiences, realities, and consequences of war and geopolitical violence through literature and art.” They accept fiction (including flash and excerpts), nonfiction (interviews, essays, and narrative non-fiction), poetry, translations, and art. All works will be considered for online and print.

Length: Up to 5,000 words for fiction, up to 4,000 words for non-fiction, up to 5 poems

The School Magazine
This is an Australian magazine for children. They publish fiction, articles, poetry, plays, and activities that have literary and academic merit, as well as comics and cartoons. For fiction, they say, “Stories can be realistic, fantastical or humorous genres with contemporary or historical settings. Stories should demonstrate clear, intriguing prose, originality of characters and fresh storylines. No longer than 1500 words (shorter stories are encouraged). Occasionally a longer story may be considered for serialisation.”
