Tenebrous Press: Skull & Laurel
While the window for general submissions (for all writers) is now closed, they are still open for submissions by marginalized writers only. Their guidelines say, “The Skull & Laurel is a quarterly magazine of New Weird short fiction. We are looking for speculative fiction that is genre-fluid and modern in its themes, subtext, characters, techniques, or form. Horror, fantasy, and science fiction stories are welcome so long as they are dark and Weird with a capital W. If your story is speculative and either blends genres or refuses to fit neatly within their confines, we want to read it.” They also accept translations and some reprints (see guidelines/submission form). The press publishes works of other lengths, too (novels, novellas, and novelettes). They are open now short fiction submissions. They have a new submission system and word count.

Do not send science fiction or fantasy.” Submission is via a form.

Kaleidotrope
Their website says, “Kaleidotrope publishes predominantly speculative fiction and poetry—science fiction, fantasy, and horror, but also compelling work that blurs the lines between these and falls outside of neat genre categories. (Man does not live on space ships, elves, and ghostly ax murderers alone, after all.)” And, “We have no minimum or maximum word count for fiction but strongly prefer stories over 250 words and under 10,000.
We consider all forms of poetry, but individual haiku, or other very short poems, may be a tougher sell.”
Deadline: 30 November 2024

SPOOKY
This is a horror magazine. They have detailed guidelines about the kind of stories they want, including, “Cozy horror. Fun horror. Classy horror. Dare we say, wholesome horror? … perhaps the easiest way to understand what we mean is to read stories by some of the old masters we love: Ray Bradbury, Charles Beaumont, Richard Matheson, Robert Bloch, Roald Dahl. Watch classic episodes of Thriller, The Twilight Zone, and Night Gallery. Read old horror comics. Listen to radio dramas like Suspense, Quiet, Please, and Inner Sanctum Mysteries. Consume enough vintage horror, and you’ll probably begin to get an idea of the type of thing that’s likely to appeal to us. … we’re looking to provide a space for a type of storytelling that has largely gone out of style – dark and scary, but playful and approachable with an emphasis on plot.” They also publish horror haiku. They’ve recently reopened for submissions, and are reading for their third issue.
Deadline: 1 January 2025
Length: Up to 5,000 words for fiction
Pay: $0.01/word for fiction
