$100 to $800 for Short Stories – 10 Publishers Seeking Submissions

These markets pay $100 to $800 for fiction. A few of these accept other genres also, like non-fiction and poetry. They are either open now, or are due to open soon, for short submission periods. Deadlines are approaching quickly. – S. Kalekar

Breathe FIYAH
Tor.com and FIYAH Magazine have teamed up to announce a call for flash fiction by Black writers, and submissions will be open for a two-day period. They will be accepting original speculative flash fiction written by Black authors, including those from the Black Diaspora and Black African authors. Their guidelines say, “So many of us are navigating the rage James Baldwin knew would be a constant struggle. We must always give voice to that rage while refusing to let it destroy us. Breathe FIYAH invites submitting authors to share the work your spirit is moving you to create. The selections will allow the larger community to inhale stories from Black voices as we celebrate Black Speculative Fiction Month, and honor the paths laid down by those who came before us. We stand in remembrance of our countless kin who asked to breathe as they were ruthlessly cut down by an oppressive system that permeates nearly every facet of our existence.” They are looking for stories that reject regressive ideas of Blackness, respectability politics, and stereotypes.

Reading period: 26-28 August 2020
Length: Up to 1,000 words
Pay: $250
Details here.

Fireside Quarterly
They will open a brief submission window for fiction in August for the Summer 2021 issue. Their guidelines say, “Our budget allows us to pay for up to 7,000 words per month, which means we are always going to buy more shorter fiction than longer stories. We especially love to see very short pieces that still tell great stories and make us laugh, cry, or transport us to new worlds.” Stories can be in any genre, in English or Spanish.  (Note: Fireside cancelled book contracts last year – see this post on the Writer Beware site.)
Reading period: 24-28 August 2020
Length: Up to 3,000 words

For this themed issue their guidelines say, “For this call we’re seeking science fiction stories that envision the future of the East Asia region in an optimistic, positive way. No dystopias, please. You can interpret this widely, but the theme has to be at the core of the story. It isn’t enough that the story be merely set in the region.” This submission call is open to all authors.

Short Fiction
This magazine is open for submissions, but they are currently not accepting work from writers in the US. They publish fiction, and guidelines say, “We have wide-ranging tastes and have happily published traditional character-driven stories next to non-conformist work of extraordinary innovation. We admire and love poets and memoirists, but can’t accept poetry or life writing. The boundaries can be blurred in hybrid forms and that’s great; if you feel your hybrid piece qualifies as fiction, send it in.” Writers who have never had a short story published before should write for their ‘Introducing’ section.

Pay: £0.02 per word, to the nearest 100 words, with a minimum of £30 and maximum £100
