The Appeal is “a worker-led nonprofit newsroom dedicated to exposing how the U.S. criminal legal system fails to keep people safe and, instead, perpetuates harm.” They’re seeking reported pieces or personal essays (800 words) about “the criminal legal system (cops, prisons, parole, alternatives to incarceration, etc).” They pay $1/word. Briarpatch is a Canadian magazine of politics and culture. They’re accepting pitches for their unthemed September/October issue.
