IJNet is Accepting Pitches
International Journalists’ Network (IJNet) offers the latest tips, training opportunities, trends, and tools for professional and emerging journalists. If you want them to report on a story, journalism tool, app or resource, then send them your pitches. Most of their freelancers work in English, but they have also added the opportunity to work in Spanish, Portuguese or Russian. They pay $200 per article. Hammer & Hope Accepts Pitches from Writers
Hammer & Hope is “a magazine of Black politics and culture.” Their aim is to “build a project whose politics and aesthetics reflects the electric spirit of the protesters who flooded the streets in 2020, a project that breathes life into the transformative ideas pointing us towards the world we deserve.” They accept pitches from writers at submissions@hammerandhope.org. They pay $1.00/word for commentary, $1.33/word for reported features, and $300/25 lines or less and $6 each additional line for poems. To learn more, refer to this page.
The Xylom is Always Open to Pitches
The Xylom is a “Gen-Z-led nonprofit exploring the communities influencing and shaped by science.” They accept pitches on a rolling basis. They publish personal essays (1,200 to 1,500 words), science analysis and opinion pieces (1,200 to 1,500 words), and narrative-driven science feature stories. They also publish 10-ish-word stories. Glamour is Looking to Connect with Freelancers
Glamour is an online magazine for women. Their purpose editor & deputy website editor is looking to connect with more freelancers with “a focus on purpose-driven content.” If you’re available for commissions, then get in touch with their editor at lucy.morgan@condenast.co.uk. Trails is Always Accepting Pitches
Trails is a quarterly, print-only magazine for “the backpacking and trail community.” They cover backpacking and other human or naturally-powered means of sleeping outdoors e.g. bikepacking, canoe camping, and even rafting or mountaineering. They’re always accepting pitches. They’re currently focusing on Issues Five and Six. They pay writers at least $0.50 a word. Sound Fields is Seeking Pitches about Audio Documentaries
Sound Fields is an online publication and event series about the art of audio documentary. Their inaugural issue asks you to help them answer: “What is an audio documentary?” They’re seeking pitches for original essays and Q and As/conversations (written/transcribed) for this issue. They have capacity to accept 3 essays and 2-3 Q and As/conversations. They will pay an honorarium of $400 for essays (1,500 words or less) and $200 for Q and As/conversations. New Internationalist is Looking for Pitches
New Internationalist is a bi-monthly magazine and a website that reports on global social and environmental justice and equality. Their co-editor is seeking pitches for well written and researched pieces: “I’m looking for hard hitting pieces of writing, making original political contributions in up to 1,500 words. How do we tackle decolonise the international economic system? How do we fight the far right? How can we build better movements across borders? I’m looking for pitches on questions like these and on the issues that are the core of our magazine: inequality, democracy, corporate power and Big Tech, climate change and environmental injustice, the oppression and dispossession of Indigenous and other groups.” They particularly want to hear from voices that are under-represented in Western media. Polygon is Seeking Stories about Twitch
Polygon is Vox Media’s gaming website. They’re running a week-long package in which they will “run stories about Twitch and its place in pop culture — including which trends are taking over the platform, what it means to be a Twitch star, what fans are up to, and what we’ve spotted at this year’s TwitchCon.” If interested, email your pitches to nicole.clark@polygon.com and CC specialprojects@polygon.com. Violet Book is a magazine about fashion, art, and womanhood. They’re commissioning a piece in their Eulogies section on Tina Turner. The piece will look at her life and influence. Studio Magazine is Seeking Submissions for Spring/Summer 2024
Studio Magazine is a national publication about contemporary
craft and design in Canada. They publish twice a
year and have an ongoing web presence. They’re looking for submissions for their
Spring/Summer 2024 issue: DEFINITION. The issue will re-visit “the question of
what it is that defines craft.” While they’re interested in the shifts brought
about by tech, they’re “also looking to explore themes including, but not
limited to, authenticity, classification, heritage, history, and cultural
