Index on Censorship is a quarterly magazine about free expression. They’re always seeking new contributors. Their senior politics and tech editor is always accepting reported feature pitches about anything related to technology and politics on the internet. Pay starts at $350. whynow is an online magazine and production studio that features stories from both emerging and established people in arts, music, and entertainment. They’re open for pitches. They want “great features, interviews, stories, and reviews in music, art, film and TV.” They pay £80 to £150 for the majority of pieces. If interested, email your pitches to editors@whynow.co.uk. Zócalo Public Square, an ASU Knowledge Enterprise, connects people to ideas and each other. They publish ideas journalism and convene events. Their editor has tweeted, “Academics who want to try writing for a public audience—I’m looking to get some pieces into my summer pipeline at @ThePublicSquare! Pitch me a 1200-word piece about how an aspect of your research shines a light on a contemporary question.” They will pay an honorarium of $150. International Journalists’ Network (IJNet) offers the latest tips, training opportunities, trends, and tools for professional and emerging journalists. If you want to write about a journalism tool, application or resource that they haven’t covered, then send them your pitches. They pay freelancers $200 per article. Slate is an online general-interest magazine that offers analysis and commentary on news, politics, business, culture, and technology. Their senior editor is looking for pitches for their column on exercise, Good Fit. They want opinion pieces and reported pieces. They do not want personal essays. Pay is $400 to $750 per piece.
