- Have a clear idea of where you proposed article will fit into the publication

- Have a clear sense of who the publication’s audience is
- Choose just one idea to pitch — and make sure it closely fits the publication’s needs

University of California Global Health Institute (UCGHI) is looking for BIPOC freelance writers to interview stakeholders and write feature stories (700-750 words) and secondary stories (500-550 words) centering themes of global health, public health, and health equity. Scalawag is a Black-led, woman-run website and magazine dedicated to the American South. They are accepting pitches. They are “interested in untold stories, fresh perspectives, and original thought covering the nuances of life, politics, and culture in the American South.” They are also accepting pitches for their “grief & other loves” series. The Xylom is a media outlet that creates “personal stories of science and humanity.” They are looking for science stories of 1,500 words. They pay a flat rate of $100. For details, refer to their editor’s Tweet and their pitch form.
Edify is Edmonton’s premier lifestyle magazine. Their editor has tweeted, “Hey, yeg writers. I’m looking to add some experienced voices who aren’t afraid to tackle difficult stories. Eighteen Eighty Two is an independent Spurs fanzine. They are “looking to feature an unpublished (or barely published) Spurs writer in Issue 2 of the fanzine.” They will assign a piece of 500 to 750 words and pay £50. They are “particularly keen on topics like fish, vintage dishes & pastry as well as interesting (non-PR) pieces on chefs & restaurants, though open to anything!” They pay £70 to £100 for the website and £300 to £400 for the print magazine.
