The Sierra is the magazine of the Sierra club, the non-profit environmental activist organization. Their readers are “are environmentally concerned, politically diverse, and actively enjoy the outdoors.” Their standard rate for online stories is $350. They pay $250 for reviews and opinion pieces. They pay up to $1.50 a word for feature articles in their print edition, and between $250 to $2,000 for other stories. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
Gaze is “a social app for queer safety, joy, and commerce.” They’re accepting pitches for their weekly newsletter which features 1 to 2 stories from their contributors. The pitches should be about “queer culture, friendships, community, sex, dating and relationships, identity, sex work, mental health, living online, our relationship to our bodies and the physical world, money, pleasure, and power.” They mostly publish first person essays (800-2,000 words), with an occasional reported feature (2,000-6,000 words). The Nonprofit Quarterly (NPQ) is a nonprofit print and digital magazine that educates the nonprofit sector through research-based articles and resources. They usually publish articles of 1,500-3,000 words. They especially look for articles and pitches that cover one or more of their “four justice areas—economic, racial, climate, and health justice—as well as leadership, management, and philanthropy.” According to their climate justice senior editor, they pay $300 for web pieces. BorderLore is a monthly digital journal that documents, shares, and elevates folklife in the US Southwest and Northern Mexico. They accept pitches from writers and photographers in the Southwest. They’re especially “interested in stories about culture and heritage outside of Tucson.” They also love “first-person narrative essays linking personal folklife to larger themes.” Rates begin at $300. Abilities is Canada’s foremost cross-disability lifestyle magazine. Topics include travel, health, sport, recreation, careers, education, transportation, housing, social policy, relationships, technology, family life, movie/book reviews, personality profiles, events and conferences. The magazine has a conversational tone. They’re not looking for personal essays, but encourage writers to draw on their experiences to illustrate a broader topic. Copy Hackers teaches people how to “write copy that converts.” They promise to help people “write more persuasive, believable and usable copy.” They want writers to send pitch emails to their content strategist. Long Now is a non-profit organization that fosters long-term thinking. Their pitch guide says, “Our work encourages imagination at the timescale of civilization — the next and last 10,000 years — a timespan we call the long now.” They want stories that explore the ‘long now’ of climate change, the rise and fall of civilizations, biotechnology and artificial intelligence, economics, architecture, and more. They accept pitches for essays (1,200 – 3,000 words), reported features (1,200 to 3,000 words), interviews (2,000 to 3,000 words), book reviews, shorter articles, fiction, and poems for Ideas, their living archive of long-term thinking. Rates begin at $600 for features and essays and range between $300 and $600 for interviews, reviews, science journalism, and news articles. Power For Living is a weekly take-home publication for Christian adults. They accept feature article submissions on a variety of topics, but they must be inspiring stories that “show the power of Christ at work.” They pay up to $375 for feature articles, $150 for columns, and $50 for poetry. Hell Gate is a worker-owned news outlet covering New York City. They have relaunched. They are looking for essays, reported stories, features, and photography. They pay $200+ for an essay/blog post (~700 words), $250+ for a photo assignment, $300+ for a reported story, and $400+ for a longer (1,200+ words) feature. Psych Central is a modern, evidence-based resource for mental health information. They provide clear, actionable steps that help readers protect their mental health. The Abundant Artist (TAA) offers online courses and training to artists on how to sell their art online. They are looking for skilled writers and/or video creators. They are interested in articles/videos about what’s working in sales right now, stories of artists transitioning from offline to online sales, how to sell on Instagram, emerging platforms (e.g. Clubhouse, TikTok), etc. Rates are $150-$300/article. Broadview is a Canadian print magazine and website about spirituality, justice, and ethical living. The print magazine is published 10 times a year and the website showcases new content daily. They serve a niche audience of progressive Christians and those who share similar core values. They are looking for stories about “spirituality, ethical living, social justice, and the United Church.” They can be “investigative features, engaging profiles, first-person narratives, reported news stories, essays, photo essays, opinion pieces, blogs, interviews or reviews of books or film.” Rate: $0.65 per word for reported pieces and $0.40 per word for Q&As, blogs, and personal essays. VICE News Canada offers original reporting from Canada and around the world. They are “looking for new talent, original news stories, and features and investigations that have a strong Canadian angle or bring Canada to the rest of the world.” According to their editorial director, their base rate for a quick reported story is $300 CAD. Faith & Leadership is a biweekly, online magazine that is a learning resource for Christian leaders. They are always seeking new writers and stories. Their feature articles are 1,500-2,000 words, essays are 800-1,000 words, and Q&As are 1,000-1,500 words. They pay $1,500 for feature articles and $300 for essays.
