Real Simple is a monthly magazine that is very widely distributed in the U.S. They have a large readership, and have remained quite successful.
Their aim is to “provide smart, realistic solutions from DIY crafts and recipes to home decor ideas, all to make your life easier.”
They are always seeking “hard-to-find features and profiles of people doing good out there in the world.”
Now, here’s the interesting part. Their editor just posted a call for pitches on Twitter. (Twitter, by the way, can be a great way to connect with editors.)
In the Twitter post, the editor offered up to $2 per word for the right story. That’s the type of rates that freelancers at the top of the field often get.
If you’re brand new to freelance writing, why not at least aim for this? Don’t expect to get a positive response, but there is no reason not to aim high. Keep in mind that the editor expects high-quality pitches that are a perfect fit. This is a highly competitive, top end opportunity.
