Eater Boston (a part of the Eater network of sites) is a local news site that reports on the drinking and dining scene in Boston. They’re looking for writers who want to write about the dining scene in Massachusetts. They primarily want writers to contribute as well as update maps and guides, but they will also occasionally consider news and feature pitches. Lonely Planet offers travel guides and information. Their destination editor is commissioning “the Washington, Oregon and Pacific Northwest guidebook.” As per this tweet, they pay $1,500+ per piece. Yes! Magazine is an independent and nonpartisan publisher of solutions journalism. They’re seeking pitches for their “Growth” issue. The issue will “highlight the people and communities that are changing how we think about growth—and showing what it means to grow together.” Rates begin at $0.50 per word. International Journalists’ Network (IJNet) offers the latest tips, training opportunities, trends, and tools for professional and emerging journalists. They’re accepting pitches for tips and tricks that will help journalists globally. Most of their freelancers work in English, but they have also added the opportunity to work in Spanish, Portuguese or Russian. Rate is $200 per article. Nurall is a tech startup that guides professional remote workers to explore worldwide neighborhoods. They’re looking for travel pitches about India and Thailand. Waging Nonviolence is a media platform providing news and analysis on social movements around the world. They’re looking for a writer (remote, US-based) to interview “leading movement figures and analysts and produce one Q&A-style article per week.” Each Q&A should be around 1,500 words. U.S. News & World Report is a media company that assists consumers in making decisions about education, health, money, cars, real estate, and travel. They’re seeking journalists based in the United States and abroad to contribute to their news vertical. Rates range from $150 to $500. Good Beer Hunting publishes insight-driven analyses, stories, and interviews on the beer industry. Their Drinkways Editor for North America is accepting pitches for stories. She wants “drink features that go beyond beer—ones that explore origins, craft, traditions and geography, rooted in people, places, and culture.” Pay is $700 for features and $325 for mini-features. New Scientist is a weekly science and technology magazine. They’re currently commissioning Christmas features. Their head of features has tweeted, “Christmas features are shorter (1,200-1,800 words) than normal features. They tend to be about stranger, funnier or more light-hearted subjects (but not always – last year we did hardcore quantum Christmas games). They can be about things you tend to associate with Christmas BUT they don’t have to be.” According to this Christmas feature guide by their feature editor, their rates begin at about £620. Zócalo Public Square, an ASU Knowledge Enterprise, connects people to ideas and each other. They publish ideas journalism and convene events. Their editor-at-large is accepting pitches at caroline@zocalopublicsquare.org. They mostly publish public-facing essays by academics or subject experts, but also welcome freelancers to pitch if they’re interested. They pay an honorarium of $150. SIDEQUEST is a monthly D&D/RPG magazine. For issue 25, they’re accepting the following pitches:

As Equals is a series by CNN about systemic gender inequality. They’re seeking pitches from Africa: “I am now looking for pitches from Africa for ‘Beyond the Binary’, a short series of stories I am editing/producing for CNN’s As Equals project. The series will have deeply reported, character led stories documenting what it means to live as an LGBTQI+ person in the global south, and how do these identities interact with broader systems such as healthcare, housing, migration, education & employment.” The length of the stories will be around 2,000 words. The series discusses the economic disparities experienced by disabled people. They’re looking for pitches in connection with cultural celebrations including Pride Month and Juneteenth. Current Affairs is a magazine of political commentary and analysis. They love receiving pitches from their readers. They have two publication formats: print edition and online edition. Their main articles for print are around 3,000 to 4,500 words, while online articles are around 1,200 to 2,400 words. They accept only a small number of submissions. Their European news editor is particularly interested in stories about “science policy and research community issues in UK/Europe.” Their rates start at $0.75/word for online-only stories and $1.25/word for print-only stories.
