North American Congress on Latin America (NACLA) is a quarterly magazine and online publication that covers “political and economic issues in Latin America and the Caribbean.” They’re accepting pitches regarding militarism in the Americas for their Winter 2023 issue. They will offer an honorarium of $250 per article (2,500 to 3,500 words) to contributors who rely on writing as their main source of income. BuzzFeed News is a news website by BuzzFeed. Their entertainment editor is looking for pitches for their entertainment section. They’re interested in access-driven reporting, features & trends, and reported investigations. The editor hasn’t mentioned the rates in their tweet, but as per their tech desk editor, they pay $0.33/word for essays and $0.50/word for reported pieces. Anime Herald is a website that offers news, reviews, interviews, and commentary on anime and anime fandom. They’re seeking pitches for articles, particularly those that would work in their Fandom or Niche categories. They pay $50 per article (1,000-2,000 words). Bolts is “a digital magazine that covers the nuts and bolts of power and political change, from the local up.” They’re always looking for freelancers to report on stories related to voting rights and criminal justice across the US. Opportunity to Write about Wario: “Freelancers! I’m taking pitches for a Wario feature in my upcoming book. Klang Magazine is a sound publication. They’re currently looking for pitches for “writing on sound studies, sonic arts, and everything in between.” They have tweeted, “And remember, a pitch doesn’t need to be for an article. Studio Magazine is a national publication about contemporary craft and design in Canada. They publish twice a year and have an ongoing web presence. They’re looking for submissions for their Spring/Summer 2024 issue: DEFINITION. The issue will re-visit “the question of what it is that defines craft.” While they’re interested in the shifts brought about by tech, they’re “also looking to explore themes including, but not limited to, authenticity, classification, heritage, history, and cultural shifts.” Pay is .30 cents/word. Going (formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights) offers cheap flight deals. They’re looking for a Senior Content Specialist, Points & Miles (contract-to-hire). The selected applicant will help in “creating and publishing high-quality content related to points, miles, credit cards, and business/first-class travel.” The applicant will work for 40 hours/week at $45/hour. Prism is a BIPOC-led news outlet that covers voting rights, electoral justice, criminal justice, racial justice, workers’ rights, immigration, the environment, gender and LGBTQIA+ issues, and more. They’re seeking pitches for their Right to Write project which is “an editorial initiative to work with incarcerated writers in the US.” They’re looking for “personal essays, op-eds, features, reported news stories, or explainers.” All stories should be under 1,600 words. ApartmentAdvisor is an online rental platform. They are seeking writers who are based in Texas to work on local stories on apartment renting. The assistant opinion and first-person editor of Metro.co.uk is looking for pitches for Immigration Nation series. The series explores “the stories of people who have moved to the UK – including many who’ve made a difference in doing so.” The editor hasn’t mentioned the rates in their tweet, but according to this tweet, they usually pay £100 for 800 words. MIT Technology Review is a media company that explains the commercial, political, and social impact of the newest technologies. They’re seeking pitches for their upcoming issue on ethics. They’re “looking for *big* swings: narrative features, investigations, essential profiles, and sharp essays at the intersection of ethics+technology.” Rates are $1 to $2 per word. Perspectives on History is the news magazine of the American Historical Association (AHA)-an organization that serves historians in all fields and professions. They publish 9 times a year in print and online. They’re seeking pitches for articles about urbanism and rurality for their 2023-24 issues. They pay an honorarium of $100 for print pieces. New Lines is “an American magazine for the best ideas and writing from around the world.” Their MidEast and newsletters writer/editor is seeking pitches on the gulf region. Pitches can be on a wide range of topics including history, science, archeology, religion, politics, and pop culture. The editor hasn’t mentioned the rates in their tweet, but according to this tweet by their North Africa editor, they pay $800 for most of their essays. Contingent Magazine is a history magazine. They’re open for pitches for their spring/early summer theme: Revive Your Darlings. They’re accepting features (2,000-3,000 words); shorts (800-1,500 words); and mini-essays (200 to 500 words). They offer a base rate of $500 for features, $250 for shorts, and $100 for mini-essays. Los Angeles Public is looking for pitches (for audio, articles, and social media) from anyone in LA County. In general, they’re seeking pitches related to their editorial policies: “housing, pollution and the environment, public safety and the carceral system, public health, and positive community-oriented stories, as well as local government watchdog stories.” Print rates: $500+ for feature, $250+ for daily news story, and $150 for brief. Social media rates: $75/hour or $150 for Twitter threads, $250-$300 for reel or Tiktok, $75/hour or $150 for IG Story / IG Carousel (4-5), and $150-$250 for IG post. Stanford Social Innovation Review (SSIR) is a quarterly print magazine and website that informs and inspires leaders of social change. They’re looking for pitches on new social innovations for their “What’s Next” section. They’re particularly seeking innovations outside the US. Pay is $600 for 800 words. YouthPAC is MENTOR’s youth-led online magazine. The overall theme for the magazine is Power. They’re currently seeking “submissions that highlight identity & community, education & equality, health & wellness, and electoral advocacy.” They want short essays (300 to 800 words), critique/analysis (600 to 800 words), poems/prose, illustrations/graphics, videos, and photography. A look into a trend you think people should know about?” The features editor hasn’t mentioned the rates in their tweet but according to Stylist’s entertainment editor, they pay £150 for 800 to 1,000 words.
