Please carefully study the publication before contacting the editor. When writing your pitch, be sure to:

  • Carefully study the publication, to get a sense of their style
  • Have a clear idea of where you proposed article will fit into the publication
  • Have a clear sense of the publication’s general schedule
  • Have a clear sense of who the publication’s audience is
  • Choose just one idea to pitch — and make sure it closely fits the publication’s needs
  • Write a short pitch (no more than 200 words)

Well+Good covers fitness, cutting-edge nutrition, natural beauty, travel, and more. Their deputy editor has tweeted, “It’s almost Earth Month, and I’m looking for a few pitches for Well+Good—sustainability and well-being, along with micro vs macro actions, all come to mind.” Rates start at $200. The editor of Sunday Mirror and Sunday People is seeking “non-Ukraine pitches – real life, investigations, scams, cost of living, new books that can be turned into features, uplifting stories.” They pay £300 to £1,000 per feature. Gayming Magazine is a publication for the LGBTQ+ video games community. Their editor-in-chief has tweeted, “Upcomer employees who were laid off (and freelancers in general), we’re constantly looking for a queer twist on esport related features.” According to a previous Tweet, their op-eds and small reviews pay £50, features and bigger reviews pay £100, and profiles and large features pay £150 to £200. Bob Vila is a source for information on home improvement, home renovation, and home repair. They are seeking freelancers to write buying guides. They want experts in all home and garden categories.  They are currently looking to assign guides on grills, bird products, lawn care, and more. Pay is $250-$600+. Trail Runner Magazine is an off-road running magazine. Their editor has tweeted, “Send me a compelling idea or off-beat story pitch about trails/foot travel in this time of loss, opportunity, & inflection. Tell me about the time you moved lightly through a landscape afoot & some encounter made you weep, made you dance, made you spit blood.” For digital pieces, their rates start at $200 and for print pieces, rates start at $0.25/word. Anime Herald is a website that offers news, reviews, interviews, and commentary on anime and anime fandom. They are looking for pitches for articles. Rate is $50 per article (1,000 to 2,000 words). The Muse is an online career platform. They cover careers and work. They are seeking freelance pitches for “reported features, essays, perspectives, even humor pieces (and yes, *some* advice articles) that shed light, provide insight, reframe, and capture zeitgeist at a moment when careers, work, and culture are shifting and evolving.” They would “love to see more ideas for reported features as well as pitches with day job–driven angles (and fewer on freelancing/why you went freelance).” They usually pay $300 to $600. Wirecutter is a product review site owned by The New York Times Company. They are seeking freelancers, specifically full-time writers who have well-rounded DIY/consumer-level smart home experience. According to their pitch guide, shorter pieces typically pay $300. Rates for long-form reviews vary. Fanfyte is Fanbyte’s wrestling section. Their editor has tweeted, “Tell you what—if you have a pitch on Scott Hall, broad or specific, something outside the style of an obituary, my email address is carrand@fanbyte.com.” They are not looking for personal essays. Immerse is a publication (produced in partnership with the MIT Open DocLab) that sparks creative dialogue around emerging forms of non-fiction media (VR, XR, AR, video games, interactive media, and beyond). They are looking for pitches for their upcoming issue: “Avatars, Assets & Access.” They are “excited to probe through what it actually takes to build, get into, & pay for virtual worlds & objects.” Their standard fee is $250. HuffPost is a source for politics, entertainment, lifestyle tips, global issues, and personal stories. They are always seeking freelance pitches. Their rates start at $125. TransLash News and Narrative is a journalism and trans storytelling platform. They are “accepting article pitches for March supporting the theme Trans Bodies, Trans Choices to center the reproductive justice needs of TGNC people.” They are seeking “stories at the intersection of reproductive rights and body autonomy, race, childbirth, abortion, trans affirming medical care, and more.” Rate is $350 per piece (750 to 1,000 words). Comment Magazine is “a magazine of public theology.” Their newly appointed associate editor is looking for pitches: “The types of pieces I’ll be seeking out and encouraging are in literature, the arts, cultural trends, theology, books, film, and the arts (as well as the non-profits and business that help support them).” They pay an average of $300 to $400 per piece. Minority Africa is a digital publication that reports on African minorities using data-driven multimedia journalism. Their associate editor is looking for a South African writer who has experience writing about sex work for an op-ed about the announcement of DOJ regarding the decriminalization of sex work in South Africa. The Progress Network is “a movement that speaks to a better future in a world dominated by voices that suggest a worse one.” They are looking for pitches. They have tweeted, “The cost of sequencing a full human genome has fallen rapidly. We’re curious about what it might mean for the future. Is that in your wheelhouse?” For something like a listicle, their rates start at $100. While for a long reported feature, their rates top out at about $1,000. Slate is an online general-interest magazine that offers analysis and commentary on news, politics, business, culture, and technology. Their senior editor is looking for a POC / non-cismale freelancer to write on the movie, Turning Red. She doesn’t want reviews. Starting rate is $200. Mangozine is a publication for emerging writers. They are accepting pitches and submissions for all kinds of writing. They are seeking personal essays, critical criticism, interviews, short fiction, reviews, reporting, radical political screeds, and unexpected recipes. Their pieces are generally 1,000-3,000 words. UKClimbing is a climbing and mountaineering website. They are looking for pitches from women. They are open to all kinds of ideas. Some ideas to start you off:

  • “Our monthly Crag Notes series is ongoing, in which writers share a nature-rich snapshot of a favourite crag or local haunt
  • So is Desert Island Peaks on UKHillwalking. Get involved!

Sliced is a food and agriculture magazine. They are seeking pitches for their ninth issue— textiles. Some of the themes they are particularly interested in are: “smart / interactive fabrics; agro textiles and geo textiles; regenerative farming for the textile industry; how food / farm waste can be used in the fashion industry; bioplastics; silk production; indigo farming; whether sustainable alternatives will disrupt or reproduce exploitation in textiles and the fashion industry.” They pay CD$0.15/word for around 1,200 words.
