Frieze is a platform for contemporary art and culture. Their associate editor has tweeted, “I am open to pitches from writers in 2023, esp. web opinion pieces on art and book/film reviews, as well as longer profiles, interviews, etc.” They will pay £230 for 700 words. Container is a digital magazine about creative technology. They’re seeking pitches that explore technology and its creative uses. They accept mid-to-longform features, including investigations (2,000 to 3,000 words); first person essays (600 to 1,500 words); illustrated articles; poetry; creative writing; podcasts; videos; and more. GAMINGbible is a website by LADbible Group about everything gaming. They cover the latest releases, emerging trends, insightful opinions, and more. They are looking for a freelancer to cover news alongside the team. Time: 9 to 5 (UK hours). Days: 3 days a week (ideally Monday to Wednesday but can be flexible). Rate: Around £140 per day. Stylist Magazine is a weekly magazine and a website for smart, successful, and sophisticated women. Their deputy digital editor is seeking first-person story and personal essay pitches around mental health. Marginalized voices are prioritized. Certified Forgotten is a “horror publication that covers horror films too small for other outlets.” They are accepting pitches for January as well as other months. Chron is Houston’s daily news source for the latest in sports, culture, food and drink, music, entertainment, weather, and politics. Their food editor is actively recruiting new contributors with strong reporting skills. This opportunity is primarily for writers based in Houston or elsewhere in Texas. If you don’t live in Houston right now but have strong ties to it, they would still love to hear from you. Rate is $0.50/word and the majority of pieces are capped at 800 words/$400. Remezcla is an independent media brand that covers emerging Latin music, entertainment, and culture. Their music editor is looking for Latinx writers that will “pitch voice-y takes on daily ~music~ news.” The writers should have the bandwidth for quick turnarounds. Rate: $75 for 500 words. TheBody is a resource for the HIV/AIDS community. TheBodyPro is a resource for folks in the HIV workforce. They are seeking pitches and writers. They want “personal stories, reported articles, op-eds, or in-depth features.” Payment starts at $350 for interviews and goes up to $600 for deep dives. Adventure Cyclist Magazine (a bicycle-travel magazine that inspires and empowers people to travel by bicycle) and Adventure Cyclist online are seeking pitches from cyclists of color. They use two types of stories from freelance writers: feature stories and the Final Mile essays. They pay $0.30 to $0.60 a word. For details, refer to their tweet and submissions page.
The New Republic (TNR) is a journal of opinion that is dedicated to solving today’s most critical issues. For the new year, their deputy editor would love some pitches for TNR online’s Sold Short (which covers inequality, labor, and justice). Rates start at $400 and kill fee is at least $50. For TNR’s print magazine, their deputy editor edits the front of the book (1,500 to 2,000 words) and favors politics and policy stories, but loves any compelling narrative with character and scene. Anime Herald is a website that offers news, reviews, interviews, and commentary on anime and anime fandom. They’re seeking articles from freelance writers. Pay is $50 per article (1,000-2,000 words). For more information, refer to their tweet, contributor guidelines, and pitch form.
Anime Herald is also seeking a part-time editor to handle 1 to 3 articles per month. The selected applicant will edit contributor drafts, communicate with contributors on revisions, and format articles for publication. Rate is $50/article. To learn more, refer to their tweet and application form.
Kotaku is a gaming news and tips website by G/O Media. Their editor-in-chief has tweeted, “Looking for pitches on battle royale games. Fortnite, Warzone, Apex Legends, PUBG, Fall Guys, etc. Can be about anything but things related to how players engage with these games, trends, and the future of the genre are especially welcome.” Rates start at $300. The Seattle Times is a daily newspaper that covers local news, politics, business, entertainment, travel, sports, and restaurants in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. Their editor is accepting pitches for their Mental Health Perspectives series, so if you live with/have a personal experience with mental illness/behavioral health needs, then email mbaruchman@seattletimes.com. Please note that this column is mainly aimed toward giving opportunity to those who don’t otherwise have a platform to share their mental health experiences. Dread Central is a website that covers horror movies, games, comics, novels, toys, and more. As part of their Black History Month programming, they are specifically looking for pitches from Black genre fans. They are particularly seeking Black writers to share their views on the genre. RANGE is a media organization covering the Inland Northwest. They are looking for pitches (from Spokane and Inland Northwest journalists) on undercovered stories from the diverse communities of the region. They pay $300-$500 per piece. Eater Atlanta (a part of the Eater network of sites) is a local news site that reports on restaurants, bars, dining trends, and food pop-ups throughout Atlanta and metro Atlanta. Their editor has posted their first quarterly call for pitches: “I’m looking for ATL writers to create restaurant maps, food guides, and feature stories on the Atlanta dining scene. In addition to the call for pitches, I also have a few stories looking for writers, including two on classic restaurants in ATL, one story involving brewery and restaurant mascot dogs and cats, and a specific cocktail map.” They haven’t mentioned the rates in their tweet, but according to Eater Portland’s editor, they pay $100-$600 per piece. Wired is a magazine that covers the current and future trends in technology. Their Ideas editor is looking for more pitches for the Ideas section. The section features argument-driven essays (1,500-2,800 words) that are complex and analytical and often include reporting. Rates begin at $500. Send your pitches to ideas@wired.com. The National is Scotland’s only pro-independence newspaper. Their editor is seeking feature and news pitches. They’re always interested in hearing arts, culture and entertainment pitches (particularly previews and interviews), human interest stories as well as stories of inspiring Scots. Insider is a global news publication. They’re looking to add some sustainability/climate writers to their Special Projects team’s freelance roster. They pay around $600 per story. To learn more, refer to this tweet and this form.
High Country News is a non-profit magazine covering the Western US. Their senior editor is looking to assign an on-the-ground story (800 to 1,400 words) on flooding in California. They want smart, unexpected angles. Bonus points for pieces that center under-represented perspectives. Rate is $1 per word. If interested, send your pitches as soon as possible to paigeb@hcn.org. The Texas Observer is a bimonthly (six issues/year) magazine and website that offers sharp reporting on news, politics, and culture of Texas. They are accepting pitches from freelancers. They publish short news stories (500 to 1,000 words), political commentaries and opinions (500 to 1,000 words), book reports (800 to 1,200 words), features (1,500 to 4,000 words), culture features (2,000 to 3,500 words), essays (1,000 to 1,500 words), postcards (2,000 to 3,500 words), and poems (30 lines or shorter). When Saturday Comes is Britain’s leading football magazine. They welcome pitches from first-time writers. Most of their articles are around 750 words but there are some exceptions, for example, Match of the Month articles are around 1,500 to 1,800 words. They pay a standard fee of £75 for 750-word articles. They pay £50 for book reviews and up to £125 for longer articles e.g. Match of the Month. Resonate is a new online travel publication. They are looking for pitches: “I received nearly 100 pitches for Resonate before the end of last year (thank you!), but not a single one was for our Game Changers vertical. Slate is an online general-interest magazine that offers analysis and commentary on news, politics, business, culture, and technology. Bellona Magazine is “a biannual journal and publishing collective.” They are accepting pitches for their ‘Surplus’ issue. They are looking for “speculative pitches on the political economy, aesthetics, rhythms and spatialities of surplus.” Rate is $150 per essay. As Equals is a series by CNN about systemic gender inequality. They are looking for pitches for a new series that they are calling Stories from the Margins. They want “stories that reveal, explain, or investigate some facet of what it’s like to belong to certain categories of women whose stories remain largely out of view.” These include (but are not limited to) sex workers, domestic workers, undocumented women, older women (45+), trans women, non-binary people, women from religious minorities, religious women defying the mainstream narratives, disabled women, and indigenous women. They will strongly prefer pitches for stories from the global south. They will pay journalists a day rate of $350. Each story will be around 2,000 words.
